My Friday Tutorial!

I find something so wonderful about decorating little tins and then opening them to reveal treasure within! Of course most of the time these tins contain minty mints but I'm going to show you how you can transform them into a treasure trove for all sorts of goodies!

Here's what you need:

A Tin
Some patterned papers, don't use anything too THICK or it's trickier to mould the paper into the corners of the tin. I've used Prima 6x6" papers as they have a pattern quite small which works with size of the tin!
Wet glue this sticks the paper to the tin firmly but lets you move it slightly to line it up!
Scissors
Pencil
Tape runner

First I like to start with the lid:
Measure your paper against the edge of the lid and allow extra to form a flap and make sure it's a long enough strip of paper to go all the way round the lid of your tin with a little overlap.

Stick the strip onto the edge of the tin with wet glue:

...then snip into rim of paper to make little flaps which are easier to mould around the edge of the tin lid and stick them down with wet glue.

..the edge of your tin lid is now covered you need to repeat this process for the lower part of the tin being careful to measure and cut the tabs as above:

...you can see I have NOT covered the area where the tin lid covers the body of the tin- this allows the tin to close smoothly.

Now you need to cover the top of the tin lid and the bottom of the tin.
I use the tin as a template and draw carefully around it onto the BACK of the paper with pencil.

I then trimmed about 1/4" inside my pencil line

..and stuck this piece of cut paper to the top of my tin this time using a tape runner for speed.

Repeat this process for the bottom of the tin and the outside of your tin is all covered- you can stop at this stage if you want but I like to cover the inside of the tin and here's how I do it:

I start with the inside edge of the tin with a strip of paper that is twice the depth of the tin edge and I push and mould it into the corners with my fingers this makes it easier to fit properly when you glue it..

...you also have a crease so you know where to cut your tabs to help your paper fit better...

 ...cut your tabs on the lower folded piece...

...now glue in place....and repeat with the inner tin lid- this is fiddly as it's a SMALL lip but take your time and measure, trim your tabs and mould the paper applying with wet glue...

To complete the inner parts of the tin you need to draw around the tin again onto the back of your patterned paper and this time trim about 6/8th" inside your drawn line. When the inner sections of paper fit stick in place with wet glue.

Now your tin is all covered it's time to Bombshell it all up!!

I stamped and coloured Ahoy Sailor and cut her out, mounting her on a Spellbinders decorative oval which I attached to the top to the tin lid but as I said I like finding little things INSIDE these tins so...

...I stamped out, coloured and cut out various Bombshell stamps from the Ahoy Sailor and Homeward Bound stamp sets and added them inside the tin!

So there you have it-an altered tin which doesn't take long, you can substitute washi tape or soft for the edging bits to make the process quicker and you can add whatever treasure you want to the inside!

Tin Type Sailor Girl!

Today is Muse Monday over on the Bombshell Blog where we showcase one Bombshell stamp set every Monday for a month.
This month it's the turn of Ahoy Sailor!

I had a little Altoid tin that was just asking to be altered so I DID!!

 First I covered the tin with some cool vintage paper from Bazzill Basics (Antique Papers)

I filled the tin with stamped images from various sea and sailor themed Bombshell Stamps.

 Pride of place went to the Beautiful Ahoy Sailor Girl herself mounted on a Spellbinders frame!

I coloured her in using my Spectrum Noir pens and cut her out and mounted her on the Spellbinders Floral Oval to go on top of the covered tin.

Ms. April's Altered Challenge

This month we have a fabby challenge from our new Ms April, Teresa:

"Hello, I’m so happy to be Miss April. My brain went crazy with ideas. This is what I settled on.... “My Altered Ego” We all have one and you who your is and what she looks like. So my challenge to you is to alter something, change its purpose or take the plain and make it beautiful. Bring out your altered ego. Most important rule....Have FUN!!"

Here's what I did for Teresa's challenge:

So I decided to get my craft metal out and alter this cute little box I'd kept after all the choccies had been eaten!!

First of all I covered the sides of the box and the lid with Tim Holtz tissue for a cool vintage look!

I cut some small panels from Prima Printery paper and adhered them to the box sides and lid.

For the lid of the box I took some Brown craft foil and cut out a piece with my fave Spellbinder die Labels 22! 

On the back of the foil panel I stamped the Sailor Girl for the Ahoy Sailor stamp set with Staz-On ink!

I then traced the inked image with an embossing instrument- a blunt pencil will work too.

Flip the foil over to the brown side and the stamped image will be standing proud.

Take a sanding block or a piece of emery paper and sand over the surface of the foil to reveal the stamped image!

I cut 6 little circles from the Prima Printery paper, dampened them and squished them up.

Once dry I unfurled the circles, inked the edges and put them together with a brad through the centre to make a cute little flower!

I finished the box with a strip of copper tape all round the sides and that was it!

Ms. November's Bombshell Challenge

This month's challenge comes from Celina:

"Hi everyone, Celina, Ms November here with my challenge for this month. On my blog I like to have Waste Not Want Not Wednesdays where I post a card I made out of scraps from my scrap drawer. We all have those pesky little scraps we can't bear to throw away, but they always seem to linger. So my challenge is to create a card using just the scraps you have on hand. It doesn't have to be perfect, in fact I love creating crazy looking cards with little bitty scraps. Bonus kudos if you even stamp on a scrap colored piece of paper instead of a white one!


I really look forward to seeing your creations and don't forget to check the Bombshell blog on November 16th to see what the DT has come up with!"

 Like most crafters I have a HUGE folder full of scraps (oops!) so this challenge was perfect for me!!!

 

OK so here's where all my supplies came from:

Stamps: Ahoy Sailor and Homeward Bound ;
Papers: Background is some Tim Holtz Kraft resist I had left over;
 The blue star paper is left over October Afternoon;
The Postcard (with the Ship stamped on) is an actual old postcard, aged with Distress Inks;
All the stamped images are stamped onto left over scraps;
The blue ribbon has been floating around my desk for months!
The paper lace was cut for another project weeks ago using Tim Holtz vintage lace die by Sizzix;
The muslin fabric was an off cut;
The Baker's Twine was actually the only thing that wasn't a left over!
Coloured using Spectrum Noir and Copics;
Spellbinder;
Distress Inks.

I LOVED this challenge - it was fun rooting through my scraps folder, I hope you 'll give it a try too!!
